Summer is the perfect time for a family road trip, but if you aren’t prepared, your family bonding time could turn into an absolute nightmare. We’ve compiled the best tips, tricks, and hacks to make your trip easy for you and fun for your kids!
- Be prepared. You’d be amazed how often drivers going on a road trip fail to do the basic necessities like checking the oil. Your oil should be changed approximately every 3,000 miles, and checked around every 300 miles. If the oil is black, it could be time to get it changed! Failing to check your oil could get you stranded miles from the nearest civilization, and who would want that especially when you’ve got restless kids with you. It is also important to make sure your radiator is filled up and you have plenty of brake fluid. Check your manual for what type of fluids you will need and step by step instructions on how to make sure your engine is ready for a long haul!
- Keep the kids entertained. Whether through activities, movies, or snacks; your kids NEED something to keep them occupied. Providing a variety of entertainment will keep your kids from becoming irritable, and can help stop fighting, yelling, and restlessness that could be a distraction for the driver. Keep the family safe and get your kids a coloring book! (Just no crayons; they’ll melt in a hot car.)
- Stop often, but not at rest stops. The whole point of a family road trip is to get out and explore, to see and experience new things together, and you can’t do that if all you do is take the interstate to your destination. Plan stops at interesting locations along your way, like the World’s Largest Ball of Twine or a Route 66 themed restaurant. This will not only give you a chance to stretch your legs, but will be a fun experience for your family to have together.
And last but not least:
- Expect the unexpected. Murphy’s Law is very much in play when it comes to a family road trip. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. That’s why it’s important to be ready for any eventuality. Have basic medicine available in your car like child friendly pain relievers, motion sickness relievers, and yes, Gas-X. Also have a first aid kit on hand in case there are any issues. You can find prepackaged emergency kits that include first aid equipment, an emergency blanket, and information on who to call for assistance at most major shopping centers or an auto parts store. It may even include jumper cables if your battery dies. You never know when these items will come in handy, but you will be so glad when you need them and they are there!
